Learn to recognize, avoid, and protect yourself from common scams.
Debt collection scams
Debt collection scams are when individuals falsely represent a payday loan lender, to obtain payments on fake outstanding debt. They may even lie and claim they’re associated with a legitimate well-known loan provider. Here are signs to help you recognize these debt collection scams. Legitimate debt collectors will not do the following:
- Use overly aggressive or rude language
- Come from an overseas telephone number or a personal un-branded email account
- Refuse to provide you with any information, or incorrect information, regarding the alleged debt
- Threaten violence, take criminal action, contact your employer, or confiscate all your salary and wages
If you receive a call or email with these red flags, avoid them. Don’t provide scammers with personal information or respond to questions with one-word “yes” answers. You can even report their email or phone call as spam on your electronic device.
Protect yourself if you think you have been a victim of a debt collection scam. Report your experience to authorities. Contact police at a non-emergency number to inform them, and report the company to the BBB.

Loan scams
Loan scams are when individuals falsely claim to be a legitimate payday loan provider, to request money upfront. Here are red flags to help you recognize a loan scam. Legitimate payday loan lenders, like Net Pay Advance, will not ask new customers the following:
- Ask for payment in advance, to apply for a loan or receive funds
- Require an initial payment via a prepaid card, money order, MoneyGram, or Western Union
- Send loan documents when you have not applied for a loan
- Have overwhelming low-rating online reviews, or have very few reviews available
If you note these warning signs with a potential lender, avoid them. Don’t provide loan scammers with personal or bank information.
Email and phone phishing scams
Phishing scammers will pretend to be a legitimate company, and encourage you to open a link, call a number, or download a file. Their download may corrupt your electronic device. Their link may take you to a fake website to collect and steal your personal information. Their phone number may call the scammer’s phone so they can collect your personal information.
The best way to protect yourself from these scams is to recognize and avoid them. Oftentimes, the damage may be done once you’ve clicked a scam link. Immediately deleting these communications and marking them as spam is the best defense.
- Hover over the sender’s name to view their email address – is it a strange address, or different than the one you’re used to for that contact?
- Hover over the link they want you to click to see the true URL they want to take you to – does the URL look strange, or does it appear to be a different page than they said it is?
- Are there misspellings in the text or the lack of a brand name?
If any of these are the case, avoid the communication they sent you. You can always open a new browser and do an internet search for the legitimate company you’re trying to reach. Get the phone number or email address off their official website. Use the contact information to call them to 1) inform them of the potential scam and 2) ensure that your account is in good standing.

The Do’s and Dont’s of Online Security
When in doubt, follow these three tips from I.T. Director Scott Hoopes:
Threaten violence or to take criminal action, to contact your employer, or to confiscate all your salary and wages
Require new customers to make a payment upfront to process an application or receive a loan
Contact you from a non-branded email address or an overseas number branded – our team is located in the US
What happens if you experience fraud?
Collect any information you have on the scammers and what you lost. Report a debt collection, loan, or email/phone scam in three steps:
Use a non-emergency number to contact your local police station and tell them what happened.
Contact the bank of your debit or credit card that was used. Send them the police report and ask them to cancel the payment or put a temporary hold on your card.
Consider reporting the scam to your State Attorney General’s Office, the Better Business Bureau, or contact the FBI through IC3.
